Here are 3 fascinating historical sites near Pigeon Forge TN you should visit during your vacation:

1. The Old Mill

One of the most iconic historic landmarks in the Smoky Mountains is The Old Mill, which is actually located in Pigeon Forge itself! Nearly 200 years ago, local farmers with sacks of grain would travel to the newly constructed gristmill along the Little Pigeon River. Those trips to the gristmill not only resulted in plenty of flour and meal for cooking but presented opportunities to socialize and build a community. As a result, the town of Pigeon Forge was born! You can still visit The Old Mill today, which is one of the oldest continually operating grist mills in the United States.

2. Elkmont Ghost Town

Another one of the historical sites near Pigeon Forge TN you should visit is the Elkmont Ghost Town, which is in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There has been archeological evidence recovered from sites in Elkmont that indicates there was human life in this area dating back to at least the Middle Archaic Period, which is 5,000 to 8,000 years before the present time! The settlement of the Elkmont area began in the 19th century, and large scale logging made a huge impact on the area in the early 20th century with a railroad line and logging community. Elkmont features some of the oldest preserved structures in the Smokies, and you can tour some of the cabins that have been rehabilitated.

3. Cades Cove

If you have a love for history, you don’t want to miss Cades Cove during your vacation to the Smoky Mountains! As one of the most popular destinations in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this valley not only offers a fantastic opportunity to view wildlife but the chance to see some interesting historical structures. In fact, Cades Cove offers the widest variety of historical buildings of any area in the national park! While traveling along the Cades Cove Loop Road, you will find 3 churches, a working grist mill, barns, log houses, and other restored 18th and 19th century structures.
